As dentistry has evolved, there are now multiple orthodontic treatments you can pick from. Of course, there are tried-and-true traditional braces, but clear aligners have also started to gain some popularity. If the latter is new to you, then you may wonder, what are the pros and cons of Invisalign? Here’s what you need to know about both these services to make a decision you feel confident in.
Braces: How Is This Treatment?
You might already know all about traditional braces. They have been used for decades as an effective solution for misalignment. Using metal wires and brackets, they are bonded on your teeth. Since they are fixed in place, this makes them a great option for minor to severe cases of malocclusions. You also won’t need to remember to wear them, while oftentimes being lower in cost.
However, despite having many upsides, there are some cons. Since they are metal, they are very visible, unless you get ceramic or clear ones. You might also notice some discomfort as the brackets rub against your inner cheeks. It’s important that you also avoid certain foods as they can break them, and it might be hard to clean between them as well.
Invisalign: Is It Any Better?
Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign is a metal-free alternative. They use plastic aligners that are custom-fitted to your teeth. They are clear, so they are very discreet while being removable. You can stick to your usual diet, just scrub your smile and trays afterward to keep them clean.
That being said, they have some downsides you need to know. You’ll have to be compliant in wearing them for 20 to 22 hours every day. As well, more severe cases of misalignment or malocclusion may not be corrected with Invisalign. This treatment may also cost a bit more than braces, depending on your unique case.
So, Which Treatment Is Right for Me?
The best way to know which orthodontic service is best for you is through a consultation. Both have their pros and cons you should be aware of. Your dentist can talk to you about what would be right for you.
For some, braces can be right for those with severe bite issues or who might have trouble remembering to put in aligners. On the other hand, Invisalign can be best if you want something more discreet or play contact sports.
In the end, both are great choices. Talk to your provider to get the most confident smile you deserve.
