Frequently Asked Pediatric Dental Questions – Glen Ellyn, IL

Ask Your Glen Ellyn Pediatric Dentist

As you can imagine, we get a lot of questions from parents and children every single day, and we always take the time to answer them. Below, we’ve gone ahead and responded to some of our most popular questions, but if there is anything else you’d like to ask, don’t hesitate to get in touch with our team.

When should my child have their first dental appointment?

The American Association of Pediatric Dentistry (as well as our team) recommends that a child attend their first dental appointment around the time that their first tooth appears, or around their first birthday (whichever happens first). This allows our team to make sure their smile is getting a great start!

How often should my child go to the dentist?

At minimum, your child should visit the dentist at least twice a year for a checkup and cleaning, as these services will enable us to find any potential problems they might have early and take care of them before they turn into bigger issues.

When should my child start flossing?

As soon as your child has two teeth that are right next to each other, you should begin flossing. At first, you’ll need to floss for them, but eventually, they will learn to do it on their own. If they don’t like the normal thread floss, there are several other flossing tools available in stores to consider.

Should my child use a manual or electric toothbrush?

Both types of toothbrushes are effective at preventing cavities, so it’s really down to personal preference! If your child doesn’t like to brush, or if they have issues reaching the back of their mouth, an electric brush might be better because it will do most of the work for them.

My child has a toothache! What should I do?

First, have them rinse around the tooth with water, and then floss it gently. If this doesn’t help, give them some OTC medication, and call our dental office. They might have a minor infection, and we’ll be happy to see them right away to give them relief.

Do you take dental insurance?

Yes! We are in-network with Delta Dental Premier PPO and also accept many other plans. Give us a call today to talk about your benefits so we can let you know what your coverage will look like at your child’s next appointment.
